SGNCS Announces €6,000 Travel Fund for 2027 World Congress in Chile

The Society for Global Nineteenth-Century Studies (SGNCS) is pleased to announce the establishment of a €6,000 Travel Fund to support participation in the 2027 World Congress, Global Imaginaries, Maritime Power, and Intercontinental Circulations: The Ambivalent Legacies of the Long Nineteenth Century, to be held at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Viña del Mar, Chile, from 20–23 July 2027.

The fund reflects SGNCS’s longstanding commitment to fostering an inclusive and genuinely international scholarly community by helping to reduce financial barriers to participation. Travel grants will be available to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, independent scholars, and scholars in temporary, contingent, or otherwise precarious academic positions whose proposals have been accepted for presentation at the Congress.

“Global scholarship depends upon global participation,” said Rodrigo Escribano Roca, one of the congress organizers. “We recognize that many outstanding scholars face significant financial obstacles to attending international conferences. These grants are intended to ensure that important voices and perspectives are represented in our conversations, regardless of institutional resources.” Funding for the travel grants will come from IP del Proyecto Fondecyt Nº 1240232, «La cultura política de la intervención post-imperial. España y las repúblicas sudamericanas del Pacífico».

The grants are designed to supplement other sources of support and may be used to offset expenses such as airfare, accommodation, registration fees, and local transportation. While awards are unlikely to cover the full cost of attendance, they are intended to make participation possible for scholars who might otherwise be unable to attend.

Applicants for travel funding must:

  • Have an accepted paper or panel presentation on the Congress program;

  • Be a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, independent scholar, or scholar in a temporary or contingent position;

  • Demonstrate financial need and explain how participation in the Congress will contribute to their scholarly and professional development.

Further details regarding application procedures, deadlines, and award amounts will be announced following the acceptance of proposals.

The 2027 World Congress will bring together scholars from around the world to examine the enduring legacies of the long nineteenth century through themes including maritime power and geopolitics, intercontinental circulations, port cities and urban imaginaries, global aesthetic forms, liberalism and capitalism, and the afterlives of nineteenth-century institutions and ideas.

The Society encourages scholars from diverse disciplinary, geographical, and institutional backgrounds to submit proposals and apply for travel support.
