Verónica Ramírez to Deliver Closing Keynote at World Congress 2027

Verónica Ramírez’s participation as a keynote speaker strongly embodies the interdisciplinary and global spirit of the Society for Global Nineteenth-Century Studies World Congress 2027. Her research highlights how the nineteenth century was also an age of worldwide circulation of knowledge, technologies, imaginaries, and print cultures, in which science, literature, and the press became central forces shaping the modern global world.

Verónica Ramírez is Professor at the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez and Director of the Center for American Studies. She holds a PhD in Chilean and Hispanic American Literature from the University of Chile. Her work lies at the intersection of cultural history, literary studies, history of science, and the transnational circulation of knowledge in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Latin America.

Her research has become an important reference for understanding how newspapers, intellectual networks, and reading publics contributed to the making of modern scientific cultures in Chile and across Latin America. Working from a deeply interdisciplinary perspective, she has explored the relationship between literature and science, the social circulation of knowledge, and the role played by women as translators, editors, readers, and cultural mediators within the world of print culture.

Ramírez is a member of the Laboratory for the History of Science, Technology and Society in Chile and has led several major research projects devoted to science and print culture. Among them are Astronomy and Literature in Chile: Dialogue and Debate in the Public Sphere (1880–1930), Reading and Writing Science: Translators, Editors, and Female Readers of Scientific Knowledge in the Chilean Press (1865–1929), and Knowledge and Practices: High School Student Newspapers and their Scientific Agency in Chile (1870–1930). Through these projects, she has demonstrated how scientific knowledge circulated through complex cultural networks involving journalism, education, translation, gender, and public participation.

Her scholarship also emphasizes the transnational dimension of Latin American print culture, showing how scientific ideas, intellectual debates, and cultural languages moved between Europe, the Americas, and other global spaces during the nineteenth century. In doing so, her work sheds light on the relationship between modernity, knowledge production, cultural imperialism, and the formation of new publics in societies undergoing profound political and technological transformations.

In addition to directing research projects, Verónica Ramírez has published widely in the fields of cultural history, literature, and history of science, and she regularly participates in international conferences and scholarly networks.

Sus investigaciones se han convertido en una referencia para comprender cómo la prensa, las redes intelectuales y los públicos lectores participaron en la construcción de culturas científicas modernas en Chile y en el espacio latinoamericano. Desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria, ha estudiado especialmente los vínculos entre literatura y ciencia, la circulación social del conocimiento y el papel desempeñado por mujeres como traductoras, editoras, lectoras y mediadoras culturales en el mundo impreso.

Ramírez forma parte del Laboratorio de Historia de la Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad de Chile y ha dirigido diversos proyectos competitivos dedicados al estudio de la ciencia y la cultura impresa. Entre ellos destacan Astronomía y Literatura en Chile: diálogo y discusión en el espacio público (1880–1930), Leer y escribir la ciencia: traductoras, redactoras, editoras y lectoras del saber científico en la prensa chilena (1865–1929) y Saberes y prácticas. Los periódicos de estudiantes de liceos y su agenciamiento científico (Chile, 1870–1930). Estas investigaciones han contribuido a mostrar cómo el conocimiento científico se difundió a través de circuitos culturales complejos que involucraban prensa, educación, traducción, género y participación pública.

Su trabajo también ha puesto especial atención en la dimensión transnacional de la cultura impresa latinoamericana, analizando cómo ideas, lenguajes científicos y debates intelectuales circularon entre Europa, América y otros espacios globales durante el siglo XIX. Desde esta perspectiva, sus investigaciones iluminan las conexiones entre modernidad, saber, imperialismo cultural y formación de públicos en sociedades marcadas por profundas transformaciones políticas y tecnológicas.

Además de dirigir proyectos de investigación, Verónica Ramírez ha publicado numerosos artículos y libros especializados y ha participado activamente en congresos y redes académicas internacionales dedicadas a la historia cultural, la literatura y la historia de la ciencia.
